BSA as a high mass calibrant for MALDI?
There has been a lot of discussion recently in the ABRF discussion group about high mass calibrants for MALDI. It seems that BSA is used by a lot of MALDI practitioners. As a few have pointed out, it's probably not a very good calibrant. The data below was obtained by ESI/MS. As you can see, BSA is quite heterogeneous. This sample was even put through a desalting step with an RP-trap cartridge. Most likely, you will not be able to resolve this heterogeneity by MALDI, so the mass you would observe would represent a composite of all of these peaks plus any additional matrix adducts.
