Configuring the SEQUEST Browser Server
Overview: If you are experiencing problems with broken links in your SEQUEST browser or it does not work at all, then your problem may be with how your server is configured. You need to check settings in your system services and WebSite Pro server properties to make sure things are set up properly. In this SEQUEST tip, we will review these settings. This tip assumes that you have installed Xcalibur Bioworks including the SEQUEST browser and WebSite Pro software. You may want to get the help of your network administrator if you are not comfortable making these changes on your own.
(1) I can't get my dang SEQUEST browser to come up at all! If your SEQUEST browser does not work at all. Then we need to check some things. You should be able to enter
http://localhost/intrachem.html
and see the SEQUEST browser home page (here's what it should look like). If you get error messages like "Cannot find server" or "Page cannot be displayed", then something may not be set up or running properly. Let's see what's up:
(a) Check to make sure that your server is running. Look in your services control panel. Go to the windows Start menu. Click on Settings|Control Panel. Double click on the Services icon, and scroll down to the Web Server service. The web server properties should look like they are shown below - status = started, startup = automatic.

(b) If the server is not running, highlight the Web Server service and click on the Start button in the Services control panel. If the status changes to a started state then your website should be up (the localhost link shown above should work now). If the web service will not start (I have seen this before), then I would suggest you try re-installing your WebSite software. You also may want to check for the latest updates and apply those after you reinstall.
(c) If the Web Server service is not set up to start automatically, I would suggest fixing that as well. Launch the WebSite server properties control panel as shown below:

In the Website server properties control panel, click on the Server tab. In the Run mode drop down box, make sure System service (tray) is selected. This makes sure that the WebSite software is run as a service, which will start it automatically when Windows NT is started. The "tray" is the small area to the right on the windows task bar at the bottom of your screen (where the clock is). Once the service has started you should see a small icon with a cloud and lightning bolt. If your service was not running, you may have to restart to see this.
(2) My SEQUEST browser works for the most part, but I sometimes experience broken links or error messages when I try and access certain features of the SEQUEST browser. If you are experiencing this problem, then your server identity may not be configured properly. Let's check it.
(a) Call up your WebSite server properties control panel as shown in 1 (c) above and click on the Identity tab. An example is shown below:

(b) If your computer is connected to the internet or intranet, in the Server Name field you should enter either the IP address or the fully qualified domain name of your machine (e.g., yourserver.yourcompany.com). Be sure to check with your network administrator if you don't know what this is. Note: your system will not likely start with "www" like mine. We are a small company with only one webserver. Also, note that I have the the server running in the single identity mode (multiple identities checkbox unchecked). Unless you are doing fancy stuff with your webserver, you should not need to check this box. Make sure you enter the right e-mail address for the website administrator (not mine!) Once this is configured, you should be able to access your SEQUEST browser server at http://yourserver.yourcompany.com/intrachem.html.
(c) If you are running your webserver in a standalone mode, i.e., not connected to the internet or intranet, then the configuration is different. If you are running the SEQUEST browser on the instrument computer that is not connected to a network, then this may be you. If this is the case, you should enter the name of your computer in the Server Name field. You can find out the name of your computer by calling up your Network control panel (right click on the Network Neighborhood desktop icon and scroll down to Properties). Look in the field called Computer Name. Enter this computer name in the Server Name field in the WebSite Server Properties | Identity tab. O'Reilly recommends that you name your computer and your server localhost, but I've found that as long as both computer name and server name are the same it works fine. Once you're configured in standalone mode, you should be able to access your site with
http://localhost/intrachem.html
and/or http://yourcomputername/intrachem.html
