Error messages when clicking on database reference

On the SEQUEST summary page you can click on the database reference which shows you the protein sequence and the highlighted sequence that was matched in the search. The reference is an abbreviated description of the protein from the header in the FASTA format database file (see text below). If you click on this link and you get an error message, e.g., "cannot open database", then check for unusual characters in the header text in the database file. For example, the "#" may cause this problem. You can use a text editor (or Microsoft Word) to search and replace the offending character and then save your new database file as a text file with the .fasta extension.

The full length reference in the database file might look like this:

>gi|71528|pir||KRHU0 keratin 10, type I, cytoskeletal (clone lambda-KH10-5) - human gi|28317 (X14487) unnamed protein product [Homo sapiens]

The abreviated database reference shown on SEQUEST summary pages may look something like this:

gi|71528
